Course Placement and The Acceleration Act at Lake Park

  • Annually students are enrolled into courses for the following year based on the following four components:

    1. Previous coursework: All students must pass the prerequisite course in order to advance to the next course in the sequence as outlined in the Academic Planning Guide.

    2. Initial placement: Students will advance to the next course in the sequence at the same course level unless a level change has been requested by the student or guardian and approved by the department leader.

    3. Teacher recommendation: Teachers are encouraged to recommend students for the next highest level of a course if their work ethic and knowledge demonstrate an aptitude for success. When in doubt, a student should be supported to stretch themselves to achieve success at a higher level.

    4. Acceleration Act: Pursuant to 105 ILCS 5/14A-32, Lake Park High School automatically enrolls students who meet or exceed State standards in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and/or science in the next most rigorous level of advanced coursework in English, social studies, humanities, mathematics, and science.

Incoming freshmen earning a score of a 4 or 5 on the 7th Grade IAR assessment will have met or exceeded the state standards and will automatically be enrolled in the next level of the course. The ELA score of the IAR will impact placement into English/literacy, social studies, and science. The Math score of the IAR will impact math placement only.

Current Lancers meeting the following thresholds on the October administration of the PSAT assessment each year will have met or exceeded the state standards and will automatically be enrolled in the next level of the course impacted. The ELA score of the PSAT will impact placement into English and social studies. The Math score of the PSAT will impact math and science placement.
