Dear Lancer Families:
The reality of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s announcement on Friday, April 17 about the suspension of “in-person” instruction for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year is difficult to process. While the news was anticipated, it certainly does not make it any easier to accept, especially for our Lancer Class of 2020.
Yesterday, the Illinois State High School Association (IHSA) announced the cancellation of the spring state tournament series, delivering yet more difficult news for our student athletes.
Lake Park High School is committed to celebrating milestones and honoring our Lancers, even though the school closures and social distancing requirements limit our ability to be together. Although the overall experience of upcoming events will look and feel vastly different than expected, Lake Park will unite in spirit to honor the Class of 2020 and continue to explore creative options for celebrating seniors, once determined safe to do so.
Please understand that the statewide directives have impacted our District decisions, which are heavy to make and disappointing to communicate. The following information reflects the dates, times and format for traditional end-of-year events:
- Prom - Cancelled
- Scholarship and Awards Night - Tuesday, May 19 (Virtual format)
- Graduation - Thursday, May 28 (Virtual ceremony)
Graduating students can expect targeted communication by the end of this week regarding the logistics of cap, gown, and yard sign distribution next week as well as submitting scholarship information for recognition. Decisions for all students regarding final exams, last day of attendance, textbook distribution and more will also be coming soon.
The 2019-20 school year will be one that is memorable for us all, but the year is not over simply because we are apart. We still have time in these final weeks to make meaningful connections, celebrate friendships and create new memories.
I commend all of our Lancer families, but particularly the Class of 2020, for your perseverance and positive spirit to triumph over these challenging circumstances.
In This Together,
Lynn Panega, Ed.D.
Superintendent
