Board of Education Approves New GPA Scale for 2024-2025

In a continuing effort to assist students with the transition from high school to the post-secondary world, Lake Park High School will change its grade point average (GPA) scale from the current 5.0 model to the more widely accepted 4.0 model for the 2024-2025 school year.

Last night, Board of Education members voted unanimously to implement this change following a comprehensive investigation that gathered input from more than 50 colleges and universities, DuKane Conference and other neighboring high schools, and scholarship programs. A team of counselors presented a proposal for consideration during the January 22, 2024 Board meeting.

District Determinations

  • The large majority of high schools in DuPage County and other local area schools beyond the county already completed a conversion from a 5.0 scale to a 4.0 scale.
  • Colleges, universities, and other post-secondary institutions utilize a 4.0 GPA scale as their standard.
  • The majority of scholarships publicize their academic requirements based on a 4.0 GPA scale.
  • Colleges, universities, and other post-secondary institutions utilize varying methods to convert student GPAs from a 5.0 scale to a 4.0 scale.

Benefits to Students and Families

Converting to the 4.0 GPA scale will provide students with accurate and common grade-point data compared to local, state, and national norms. This means students will have GPA values that align with college admission and scholarship standards, thereby removing any subjectivity or miscalculation. The current 5.0 scale causes unnecessary confusion for students, families, and institutions.

Who will this impact?

Following the Board’s approval, the District will implement the 4.0 GPA scale for all Lancers during the 2024-2025 school year. This means that there will be no impact on this year’s graduating Class of 2024. Furthermore, these changes will not affect alumni transcripts; historic grade data will remain on the 5.0 scale.

Next Steps

Counselors are ready to help families navigate this new scale with minimal disruption and maximum benefit to our Lancers. It is important to note that this shift will not affect the grades your student has earned nor how the rigor of their coursework impacts the GPA. Advanced Placement and Honors courses will continue to receive weighted grades. This change only affects the way your student’s GPA is reported, putting our scale in line with educational standards nationwide at the high school and collegiate levels. Students should contact their counselor with any questions.
