Freshman/Sophomore Band is an ensemble of freshmen and sophomores working to improve music skills to facilitate their successful auditioning for Symphonic Band. This class is also for freshmen or sophomores who are switching instruments and need a bit more time to make the transition successfully. Emphasis will be on tone production, accurate rhythm reading, and general instrumental music ensemble knowledge and skills.

Symphonic Band is comprised of the more advanced freshmen, sophomores,
juniors, and seniors who have participated in an elementary and/or junior high
school band program and who have qualified for Symphonic Band by audition. The
emphasis is on gaining specific musical knowledge and skills through a
performance medium. The repertoire includes all styles of intermediate to
advanced band literature. By registering for this course, students commit
themselves to participate in the following additional activities:
1) Lake
Park concerts (five per year)
2) Symphonic Band contests (two events)

Wind Ensemble is a select group of woodwind, brass, and percussion players
who have sufficiently developed their performance skills to be able to perform a
more select and difficult repertoire of band literature. The emphasis is on
developing musical comprehension, perception, discrimination, and specific
musical knowledge and skills by a detailed submergence in musical performance.
All advanced students are encouraged to participate in I.H.S.A. sponsored solo
and ensemble contests. Some students are selected for the All-District and
All-State bands. In addition to normal class activities, by registering for this
course, students commit themselves to participate in the following additional
activities:
1) Lake Park concerts (five per year)
2) Wind Ensemble
contests (three events)
3) I.H.S.A. band organization activities, if
scheduled

Music Theory is designed to prepare the student for a college music course or is for the music student interested in learning more about music theory. The course is designed to teach classroom theory. A survey of western music history and literature is an integral part of the course. Electronic music notation and sequencing will be incorporated into projects throughout the course. Students need to have a reading knowledge of music.

This course is designed to be the freshman treble ensemble at Lake Park High
School. The goal of the course is to provide each student with a wide variety of
experiences so they have a solid musical foundation on which to build. The
ensemble will be exposed to a variety of treble choir literature and will also
have extensive study in pitch and rhythmic rotation, sight-reading, ear
training, and tone production. Students enrolled in this course have the
opportunity to audition for the extracurricular group, East Mixed Ensemble. By
registering for this course, students commit themselves to participate in the
following additional activities:

The Chorale is designed to be a mixed ensemble. It is open to sophomore
girls and freshman and sophomore boys. The course aims to improve each student’s
singing skills and overall musicianship. The Chorale will study and perform a
wide variety of choral literature for mixed choruses and will have considerable
study in sight-reading, ear training, and other experiences to improve musical
literacy. Students enrolled in this course have the opportunity to audition for
the extracurricular group East Mixed Ensemble. By registering for this course,
students commit themselves to participate in the following additional
activities:

2) all dress
rehearsals
3) Choral Music Contest and festivals

The Concert Choir is the top level mixed chorus musical offering at Lake
Park High School. The junior girls perform some numbers in an advanced treble
ensemble. They also perform selections with the Concert Choir. The junior boys
are combined with the Senior Concert Choir. The repertoire ranges from
Renaissance to 20th century, sacred to secular, and a cappella to a varied means
of accompaniment. In addition to the literature being prepared for performance,
there will be extensive work in further developing each student’s singing,
sight-reading, and tonal memory skills. Students enrolled in this course have
the opportunity to audition for the cocurricular group, the Lake Park Chamber
Singers. This class is open to junior and senior students, and all interested
students must audition for and receive consent of the instructor. By registering
for this course, students commit themselves to participate in the following
additional activities:
1) all Lake Park concerts (four per year)
2) all
dress rehearsals
3) Choral Music Contest and festivals

This course provides the student with exposure to a wide range of jazz and
swing choir literature and includes movement and staging. Students will study
pop, jazz, standards, patriotic, novelty, and religious literature. All students
enrolled in Jazz/Swing Choir must also be concurrently enrolled in Concert
Choir. By registering for this course, students commit themselves to participate
in the following additional activities:
1) all Lake Park concerts (four per

community
*Students wishing to take Jazz/Swing Choir for only one semester
