This course stresses intense oral expression through discussions, skits, and speeches. The study of literature, history, art, music, and contemporary issues serves as a basis for continued cultural studies with concentrations on Mexico, Latin America, and Spain. Grammar is reviewed and new tenses are learned. Students are required to watch Spanish television programs on a weekly basis outside of class.

This course is a rigorous and intensive review of all grammar, vocabulary, literature, and culture previously studied with emphasis placed on the “fine points” in order to prepare the student for the AP Spanish Language exam. Listening comprehension via tapes and videotapes of native speakers, speaking, writing, and reading are stressed. Articles from current Spanish periodicals are studied for cultural context as well as structural analysis and active/passive vocabulary expansion. Students are required to watch two hours of television in Spanish per week outside of class.

AP Spanish Literature is a rigorous course in which students read, analyze, and interpret the literature of the five Spanish authors (García Márquez, García Lorca, Matute, Borges, and Unamuno) covered on the Advanced Placement test. In addition, students will organize and develop critical and analytical prose essays. Lectures in Spanish on literary topics are also an integral part of the course.

Spanish-speaking Hispanic students would take this course to improve their Spanish in the same way American students take English to improve their English language skills. The course is designed to improve a student’s ability to read and understand as well has to write and be understood. The units of instruction are built around chapter themes which address vocabulary, spelling, grammar, reading comprehension, writing skills development, and cultural themes.
