Foreign Language Courses - ESL

ESL: ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

This foreign language class is designed for students from other countries who are in the process of learning English. The purpose of ESL is to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students go from simple to more complex grammar while building vocabulary and increasing their knowledge of American culture. Through a placement test, students enter a beginning, intermediate, or advanced track of ESL studies. If students are not simultaneously enrolled in another English class, ESL is counted as the required English class. If simultaneously enrolled in another English class, the ESL class is counted as an elective. Students will receive a letter grade.

The initial emphasis is on survival questions and everyday vocabulary. Throughout all levels, oral language development is stressed. Students increase their vocabulary as they study the following: subject pronouns, object verbs, possessive adjectives, possessive nouns, prepositions, the concept of singular and plural, demonstratives, simple present tense, negatives, short and long answers, object pronouns, adverbs of frequency, contrast, regular and irregular past tense, review of "wh" questions, present continuous tense, past continuous tense, future continuous tense, and possessive pronouns.

Students will have the opportunity to complete individual work related to their mainstream classes in a guided classroom environment. Students receive a grade of pass or fail.
