ART FUNDAMENTALS 2-D;

An introductory course to two-dimensional media, Art Fundamentals 2-D deals with the basic elements and principles of art in drawing, painting, and printmaking. Emphasis is on a variety of media and techniques for producing art and criteria for evaluating art. The course is required before proceeding to any two-dimensional studio level course. A grade of ā€œCā€ or better is recommended for enrollment in an advanced course.

An introductory course to three-dimensional media, Art Fundamentals 3-D deals with the basic elements and principles of design. This course is
required before proceeding to any three-dimensional studio course such as ceramics, sculpture, and jewelry. The student is exposed to hand building in clay, piercing and/or forming in metal, and a variety of techniques for sculpture. Emphasis is placed on technique and process, perceiving, and evaluating works of art that are both decorative and functional. A grade of ā€œCā€ or better is recommended for enrollment in an advanced course.

ADVANCED 3-D STUDIO;

Advanced 3-D Studio is an advanced studio level course in three-dimensional concepts, techniques, and materials needed to design and produce nonfunctional sculptural forms including carving, modeling, construction, and mold-making. Jewelry making offers experiences in designing and creating functional and decorative adornments using skills of soldering, forming, and finishing.

Art Drawing 1 offers wide-range exploration of drawing methods. Emphasis is placed on observation of subject matter, creative interpretation of subject matter, evaluation and critical analysis of art work, as well as historical development.

Art Drawing 2 is an intensified studio level course dealing with a wide variety of drawing methods and media. Creative application of skills and knowledge from previous art courses is emphasized, along with an increased emphasis on problem development and problem solving.

Art History offers students the opportunity to study art from historical and aesthetic viewpoints. Students relate world history to the development of all four of the arts: drama, dance, music, and the visual arts. Classroom work includes lectures, small lab projects, field trips, and guest speakers.

Ceramics 1 explores traditional methods of slab, coil, and forming as well as wheel-thrown pottery. A variety of glazing techniques is also explored.

Ceramics 2 continues the exploration of traditional methods of slab, coil, and forming as well as wheel-thrown pottery. A variety of glazing techniques is explored and more emphasis is placed on wheel-throwing.

Commercial Art 1 emphasizes problem-solving activities, research, and evaluation in the area of visual communication. Specific units include graphic design, typography, layout, illustration, and computer graphics.

COMMERCIAL ART 2;

Extensive exploration into careers in the areas of visual communications and commercial art is the basis for research, evaluation, and production in Commercial Art 2. Three-dimensional design is introduced and advanced work in graphic design, typography, layout, computer graphics, and illustration is included. The dynamics of the commercial art job market and portfolio preparation are introduced.

PAINTING 1;

This course includes the study of painting through perceiving, producing, and evaluating works of art. The historical development of various painting styles is studied in conjunction with color mixing, application, brush techniques, and picture composition. Students work in egg tempera, watercolor, and acrylic media.

PAINTING 2;

An intensified studio level course, Painting 2 emphasizes independent research and media exploration. The development of creative thinking and problem-solving techniques is stressed. Students choose a single media or problem for extended investigation.

PHOTOGRAPHY 1;

Grades 11-12; 1 Semester

Photography 1 is a studio course which covers the use of the camera, black-and-white film developing, black-and-white print processing, and print presentation. Students must provide their own 35mm SLR or Rangefinder cameras. A camera with manual exposure controls of aperture and shutter speed is recommended but not required.

PHOTOGRAPHY 2;

Photography 2 covers advanced black-and-white film and print processes. A variety of developers are used, as well as new processes of solarization, high contrast, bas relief, texture screens, panaromas, multiple picture building and hand coloring. Students need a 35mm SLR or Rangefinder camera.

PHOTOGRAPHY 3;

Photography 3 continues to build on basic black-and-white photographic principles with projects in photo journalism and photo essays. Alternative methods will be explored with color image transfers, color emulsion transfers and SX-70 film manipulations. Traditional methods of photo etching will be covered and digital manipulation of original work will be introduced using Photoshop software. Students will need the same 35mm camera used for Photo 1 and 2.

PRINTMAKING;

This course involves the study of printmaking through perceiving, producing, and evaluating works of art. The historical development of various printmaking techniques is coupled with media exploration in intaglio, relief, and serigraphic techniques.
